According to Andres Piirsalu, a member of the board of LKF, the increase in the number of cases does not simply reflect the traffic behavior of drivers, but primarily this year's weather conditions. "While at the beginning of 2026 there was a lot of snow for two months, constant negative temperatures and, as a result, dangerously slippery roads, the same period in 2025 was rather warmer in Estonia and with little snow. It is precisely the difficult road conditions caused by the weather that have driven the number of accidents and led to significantly more damage", said Piirsalu.
In addition to the weather, the increase in damage has also been influenced by an increase in the number of insured vehicles. While at the end of March 2020, there were approximately 755,000 vehicles with motor third party liability insurance in Estonia, at the end of March 2026 their number reached 872,000. In six years, the number of insured vehicles has increased by almost a fifth, the Fund said.
