Gross written premiums amounted to EUR 28.5 billion at regional level, up by 8.3% y-o-y. At the same time, claims paid remained stable, only decreasing by less than 1% y-o-y, to EUR 12.78 billion. One should note that, as 1H data for Bulgaria were not available, we have used Q1 data for our calculations. Furthermore, some of the tables contain XPRIMM estimations for the results of the Romanian market, as 1H data were only partially available. As a result, we anticipate that the approximations we used may introduce a 2% error in the overall result. Since claims data for Slovenia and Romania are likewise unavailable, the error on the claims side may be more substantial, undoubtedly changing the final outcome significantly.
Except for Estonia, all CEE markets saw a positive dynamic, in many cases at double-digit rates. The highest growth rates belong, in general to the smaller markets in the region, as Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia etc.). Among the most relevant markets in region, Hungary saw the highest growth rate, of 19%. If the market maintained in Q2 the same dynamic as in Q1, also Bulgaria might be a top performer. Romania, Slovakia, Poland, Czechia remained in the single-digit zone. In a visible revival after the crisis of 2024, when the reform in the health insurance sector stripped out a serious portion of the Slovene non-life business, Slovenia recorded a business growth of 11%.
Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Romania and Slovenia remained the Top 5 countries in total GWP terms. Romania reversed places with Hungary in the regional the hierarchy once again, but given their nearly equal weights in the regional GWP, their relative position in the ranking is not very significant.
Life insurance
Life insurance GWP totaled EUR 7.48 billion across the CEE, by 9.94% more y-o-y. According to XPRIMM estimations, only Croatia saw a negative trend in life insurance. Hungary, on the other hand, recorded a spectacular growth, of 36.8% y-o-y, half of it coming from the increasing popularity of the U-L products, for which sales increased by about 35.8%. The transformation of the insurance extra-profit tax and the subsequent recovery of single-premium life insurance were also mentioned by market representatives as factors enabling the market growth.
Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Slovenia (preliminary figures) and Romania formed the Top 5 life insurance markets, accounting together for about 82% of the regional GWP.
Non-life insurance
Non-life insurance GWP accounted for EUR 21 billion, 7.7% up y-o-y at regional level. At the same time, claims paid apparently remained stable, at about EUR 8.64 billion (0.9% less y-o-y). However, given that the figure excludes claims paid by Romanian, and Slovenian insurers, there is a good chance that paid claims increased in line with the growth in GWP.
Poland, Czechia, Romania, Hungary, Slovenia are the Top 5 non-life markets, a hierarchy that remained stable throughout the last years. The five markets account together for about 76% of the gross premium written across the region.
