The insurance markets of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) recorded gross written premiums of EUR 31.47 billion in the first half of 2026, up 7.73% year-on-year, according to XPRIMM calculations based on national supervisory data. Claims paid increased by 7.59%, reaching EUR 15.32 billion, although the regional total is incomplete due to reporting gaps.
Most of the 17 markets covered recorded positive premium growth, with Hungary (+16.36% in euro terms), Romania (+11.83%), Montenegro (+11.88%) and Slovenia (+10.98%) among the strongest performers. Poland remained the region's largest insurance market, generating EUR 11.01 billion in premiums.
Life insurance outpaced non-life, with premiums increasing by 11.05% to EUR 8.44 billion, supported by growing demand for protection and investment-linked products. Non-life premiums rose by 6.56% to EUR 23.02 billion, while claims paid increased faster, by 7.98%.
Motor insurance remained the largest non-life segment, generating EUR 12.13 billion in premiums (+5.74%). However, rising repair costs, vehicle technology and claims inflation continued to challenge profitability, particularly in MTPL and Motor Hull.
Property insurance premiums increased by 6.8% to EUR 4.93 billion, while claims developments varied considerably across markets, reflecting uneven natural catastrophe exposure. Significant protection gaps remain a major concern, with large proportions of residential properties still uninsured in several CEE countries.
Overall, the regional insurance industry maintained a positive growth trajectory, but claims inflation, natural catastrophe risks and uneven economic conditions continued to underline the importance of adequate pricing, improved risk assessment and stronger insurance protection.
