GDV: Ski Accidents: rare, but increasingly costly

Skiing accidents account for just 2.6% of all reported accident claims, but they generate above-average costs, reaching EUR 7,907 per case - around EUR 400 more than five years ago, according to German Insurance Association (GDV).

“Especially when accidents happen abroad, costs can escalate quickly due to expensive medical treatment or helicopter rescue operations,” said Jörg Asmussen, Managing Director of the GDV.

The 2024/25 season recorded the highest number of ski collisions since systematic data collection began in 1979/80, with an estimated 51,000 - 53,000 skiers requiring medical treatment. Hospitalizations also increased year on year.

While skiing accidents remain relatively rare, their rising frequency and cost intensity underline the importance of prevention and adequate insurance coverage - particularly for winter sports holidays abroad.
