STATISTICS: ALBANIA 1H2026: Paid claims increased faster than GWP, driven by the MTPL segment

Albanian insurers wrote gross premiums worth EUR 140.58 million, 7.48% up y-o-y in 1H2026. Because of the about 4% appreciation of the Albanian Lek against the European currency, statistical data denominated in local currency show a lower dynamic (3.16% growth).

Life insurance continued to hold just a small share in the market portfolio, of about 9.26%, although GWP for this segment rose by almost 11% (in euro). As such, non-life insurance classes remain dominant. Motor insurance classes – in particular MTPL insurance (59.56% of the market GWP) -, remained not only the market segments with the largest share in the portfolio, but also the market drivers, providing for about 70% of the market growth in absolute terms.

The pronounced dependence on motor classes is visible also on the paid claims side. Overall, Albanian insurers have paid claims worth EUR 50.77 million, 21.64% more y-o-y. Most of the claims expenditure increase came from the MTPL insurance line (33% up y-o-y), while the fire insurance line also contributed significantly.

The largest insurers in the country in terms of GWP were Albsig jeta (40.74% share of the life insurance GWP), followed by SIGAL Life (29.4%) and SICRED (15.7%). SIGAL UNIQA ranked first in the non-life insurance ranking – 26.12% market share, while ALBSIG and EUROSIG are completing the Top 3, wit market shares of 19.9% and 13.2% respectively.
