On November 4, Generali Romania marked 190 years since the opening of its first agency on the territory of modern Romania, celebrating the milestone through a special event held at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest.

The evening’s highlight was the launch of the historical study “Generali in Romania from 1835 to the Present,” accompanied by an exhibition of original archival documents and artifacts tracing the company’s nearly two-century-long presence in the country.

According to the research, Generali’s first agency in Romania was established in 1835 in the port city of Galați, a thriving economic hub at the time alongside Brăila. From those early years to today, Generali’s story in Romania has been one of innovation, adaptability, and responsibility, mirroring the country’s modern evolution. The company’s history is interwoven with the legacy of prominent Romanian figures such as Dimitrie A. Sturdza, Alexandru Marghiloman, Virgil Madgearu, and Michele Sulfina, as well as with landmark buildings that now form part of Romania’s architectural heritage.

The book, authored by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Matei Gheboianu, Lect. Dr. Daniela Popescu, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Florin Andrei Șora from the Faculty of History, University of Bucharest, was developed with the support of the Generali Historical Archives in Trieste. It provides a detailed chronology of Generali’s operations in Romania, bringing to light rare documents, photographs, and testimonies illustrating the company’s deep connection with Romanian society. The digital version of the publication is available on www.generali.ro.

The anniversary event brought together prominent figures from the economic, diplomatic, and academic spheres, including Andrea Sironi, Chairman of Assicurazioni Generali and President of Bocconi University, Manlio Lostuzzi, CEO of Generali CEE Holding, Alexandru Petrescu, President of the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF), and Roberto Musneci, President of the Italian Chamber of Commerce for Romania, alongside business leaders, insurance professionals, and institutional partners.

“Celebrating 190 years of Generali in Romania means more than honouring history – it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to resilience, excellence, and protection,” said Andrea Sironi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Assicurazioni Generali. “In uncertain times, insurers play a crucial role in providing security and stability. Generali stands as a lifelong partner, dedicated to supporting communities and fostering sustainable development.”

Adrian Marin, CEO of Generali Romania, added: “Our 190-year journey in Romania has been built on entrepreneurial courage, constant transformation, and the trust of people who believe in a safer tomorrow. True strength lies not only in numbers but in the values that guide us — respect, responsibility, and doing good.”

The authors of the study emphasized that their work reconstructs the lesser-known chapters of Romania’s insurance history, revealing how Generali — formerly “La Generala” — brought innovation and modernization to the Romanian insurance landscape through nearly two centuries of change.

In a setting that bridged heritage and innovation, Generali Romania reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to the values that have shaped its identity: responsibility, sustainability, and respect for people and communities.

The celebration is part of a broader anniversary campaign that includes special offers for customers and an online awareness initiative marking this historic milestone.

At the end of the first half of the year, Generali Romania reported gross written premiums of 929 million lei and gross claims paid amounting to 534 million lei, serving over 813,000 customers nationwide.
