Poland: motor insurance claims grow in number and value in the first three quarters pf the year

In 3Q 2024, insurers in Poland processed over 1.4 million claims under MTPL and motor own damage insurance (MoD). According to the data of the Insurance Guarantee Fund Information Centre, paid claims reached PLN 14.3 billion, including PLN 8.1 billion for MTPL and PLN 6.2 billion for MoD claims.

The number of MTPL claims increased by 6% y-o-y, reaching 755,000. AT the same time, the number of MoD claims rose by 9%, totaling 650,000. In total, insurers handled 2.36 million claims, compared to 2.17 million the previous year. To put figures in the context, one should note that at the end of September, there were 29.4 million active MTPL insurance contracts on the motor vehicle market and 7.67 million MoD policies. The MoD/MTPL ratio was 26.1%.

The claim frequencies remained stable at 0.031 for MTPL and increased slightly by 1%, reaching 0.109 for MoD insurance.

Total payouts increased by 18% y-o-y, impacted by rising claims handling costs. MTPL compensations amounted to PLN 8.09 billion, with PLN 6.93 billion for non-personal claims and PLN 1.16 billion for personal claims. MoD compensations totaled PLN 6.17 billion.

These figures reflect a significant increase in claims volume and payouts, driven by higher costs and more frequent reporting.
