LATVIA: LAA: This heating season has been the most expensive in the last three years

As the winter was marked by persistent snow cover and prolonged negative temperatures, the number of insurance claims related to winter weather conditions and more intensive heating of homes increased last heating season, the Latvian Insurance Association (LAA) said.

Data compiled by the LAA show that 8,745 insurance claims were registered last season, which is 24% more than the year before, when 7,040 cases were recorded. At the same time, total amount of paid compensation and reserves has also increased significantly – from about EUR 9 million in the 2024/2025 season to more than EUR 13 million this season. For comparison, in the 2023/2024 season, just under EUR 12 million were allocated in compensation.

"The actual losses are certainly much greater, as only about half of the residential homes in Latvia are insured”, said Jānis Abāšins, head of the LAA. According to him, residents more often insure private houses, less often apartments, although the risks can be even greater in apartments, because of neighbors.

The most common accidents this winter were pipe bursts and liquid leaks, which accounted for approximately 60% to 70% of all winter season accidents. They were usually caused by severe frost, worn-out communications, or insufficiently insulated water pipes.

"This season's data shows that housing safety in winter is still not being given sufficient attention. Many accidents occur not due to extreme weather conditions, but due to worn-out communications, untested heating equipment, and everyday carelessness. Timely preparation for the heating season can protect against losses that have already exceeded EUR 13 million this year", emphasized Jānis Abāšins.

This heating season has been the most expensive in the last three years, and this shows that preventive safety measures in homes are becoming increasingly important, the LAA noted.
