ROMANIA: As storms hit harder, CASCO Insurance pays over RON 62 million in claims

The increasing frequency and intensity of severe weather events in recent years confirm that storms have become an ever-present risk for motorists. Hail, falling trees and wind-blown objects, as well as flash floods, can cause significant damage to vehicles, making CASCO insurance an essential source of financial protection.

According to data provided by UNSAR member insurance companies, more than RON 62.3 million was paid in CASCO claims last year for storm-related vehicle damage, following the settlement of over 5,600 claims. These figures highlight the substantial financial impact that extreme weather events can have on vehicle owners and the important role CASCO insurance plays in protecting them.

On average, 15 vehicles and 15 homes were compensated every day last year for storm-related damage. Despite the growing exposure to severe weather, only around 10% of vehicles in Romania are currently protected by a CASCO policy.

"Extreme weather events are no longer isolated incidents but an increasingly common reality. A single storm can generate repair costs that are difficult to cover from personal savings. CASCO insurance effectively transforms a major financial risk into a manageable situation, providing motorists with the protection they need when unexpected events occur," said Alexandru CIUNCAN, President & CEO of UNSAR.

"Depending on the policy terms and conditions, CASCO insurance can provide protection against a wide range of risks—from natural hazards such as storms and hail to accidents, vandalism and theft. We encourage vehicle owners to carefully assess the benefits of this type of insurance and choose the level of protection that best suits their needs," added Alina BĂRBULESCU, General Insurance Coordinator at UNSAR.

UNSAR encourages vehicle owners to consult their insurer or insurance intermediary to better understand the coverage options available under a CASCO policy and to select a solution tailored to the value of their vehicle and the way it is used. As extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, voluntary motor insurance can make the difference between absorbing substantial repair costs out of pocket and recovering quickly after a loss.
