Last year, the largest payout under a CASCO policy exceeded 1 million lei, following a severe collision that left a vehicle badly damaged - an example of how expensive accidents can be. Fires also highlight the destructive potential of unexpected events: in one case, flames caused damage of around 400,000 lei to a passenger car, while a blaze involving a commercial vehicle led to a CASCO payout of more than 750,000 lei. Theft remains another ever-present risk, with insurers compensating policyholders with sums reaching 390,000 lei for a single stolen vehicle.
Climate change is further amplifying challenges. In just the first two weeks of July, insurers opened hundreds of CASCO claims due to powerful storms that battered several regions across the country.
“Major damages recorded last year show just how costly unforeseen incidents can be—whether we are talking about a collision, a fire, or theft. CASCO insurance is not only about covering repair bills; it is about ensuring that you are not left alone to deal with financial loss,” said Alexandru Ciuncan, President & CEO of UNSAR.
The growing importance of mobility, coupled with high repair costs, is driving more Romanians to protect their vehicles with CASCO insurance. This trend is reflected in market data: in 2024, payouts under CASCO policies increased by around 9%, surpassing 2.3 billion lei. The upward trend continued into the first quarter of 2025, with payouts up by 4% compared to the same period in 2024.
“This growth reflects both a higher exposure to risks and the trust that clients place in these financial protection products,” noted Alina Bărbulescu, General Insurance Specialist at UNSAR. She added: “In a context marked by increasingly frequent extreme weather events, CASCO is no longer just an optional benefit, but a real necessity for protecting the investment made in one’s vehicle. Insurance cannot prevent damage, but it can make the difference between a major financial loss and a concrete recovery solution.”
CASCO policies offer comprehensive coverage for a wide range of risks, including damages from collisions, falling objects, natural disasters, theft (total or partial), fire, and vandalism. Unlike RCA (third-party liability insurance), which protects others against damages caused by the policyholder, CASCO is voluntary and protects the insured’s own vehicle.
Depending on the insurer, CASCO coverage may also include additional services such as compensation for lost or stolen keys, coverage for injured passengers, or roadside assistance—often extending across Europe. Extras like replacement vehicles, hotel accommodation, or support to continue a journey make CASCO policies an even more practical solution.
In short, CASCO is a smart investment—one that safeguards both the vehicle and the personal budget when unforeseen events strike.
