AM Best affirms Bosna Re ratings with stable outlook

AM Best has affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of B+ (Good) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of "bbb-" (Good) of Bosna Reosiguranje d.d. Sarajevo (Bosna Re). The outlook for both ratings remains stable.

According to AM Best, the ratings reflect Bosna Re's very strong balance sheet, supported by risk-adjusted capitalization at the strongest level under Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), despite a relatively limited capital buffer. The agency also highlighted the company's adequate operating performance, limited business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management. At the same time, AM Best noted that the reinsurer remains exposed to the economic, political and financial risks of the domestic market due to the concentration of its investments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while its relatively small capital base compared with larger international reinsurers may result in greater capital volatility.

Bosna Re has maintained solid underwriting profitability, posting a combined ratio of 95.6% in 2025, broadly in line with its five-year weighted average of 95.0%, while generating a weighted average return on equity of around 9% over the 2021–2025 period. The company also benefits from consistent investment income and a prudent underwriting strategy supported by comprehensive retrocession protection.

AM Best further noted Bosna Re's dominant position in the domestic reinsurance market, where it holds approximately 80% market share based on gross written premiums. Around 90% of the company's premium income originates from Bosnia and Herzegovina, although Bosna Re has gradually diversified its portfolio through the selective underwriting of international reinsurance business.
