Moldova's insurance sector grew by 11.63% in the first half of 2026, reaching MDL 1,778.26 million (EUR 88.26 million), according to data published by the National Bank of Moldova.
The market is dominated by non-life insurance, which generated over 97% of the market total. Meanwhile, the share of life insurance shrank further, representing just 2.77% in the market portfolio.
Motor insurance brings over 64% of all market premiums, with MTPL alone accounting for nearly 45%. However, accident insurance recorded the highest growth rate for the half-year period (+106.51%).
Total paid claims rose by 18.32% to MDL 776.46 million (EUR 38.54 million). Paid claims increased across almost all lines of business, except for health insurance and other property insurance.
Among the nine insurers operating in the market during the first half of the year, ASTERRA GRUP SA continues to lead in terms of GWP, holding an 18.34% market share. It is followed by GRAWE CARAT ASIGURARI SA (13.12%) and GENERAL ASIGURARI SA (12.20%). The top three remained unchanged compared to the same period last year.
