SLOVENIA: Insurance Days in Slovenia: the insurance companies are capital-solid and financially strong

11 June 2025 — Marina MAGNAVAL
The 31st Insurance Days in Slovenia took place under the slogan "Changing the View". The Director of the Insurance Supervision Agency, Gorazd Čibej, assessed performance of insurance companies last year as positive, and based on the data available to the agency, he described Slovenian insurance companies as capital-solid and financially strong, according to the Slovenian Insurance Association.

Sergej Simoniti, chairman of the organizing committee and CEO of Coface, noted that Slovenia is still shaped by its socialist past through an extreme version of paternalism. "We need to establish a culture where we inform younger generations about the risks and the measures that are available”, he said.

At a roundtable on geopolitics and resilience of the financial system, Minister of Finance Klemen Boštjančič warned that the European financial system is currently under pressure. "Europe must learn to rely on itself. And Slovenia has its own opportunity in this story”, he said. The Minister of Finance also touched on the current macroeconomic situation. He was not surprised by the recent drop in Slovenia's GDP in the first quarter, as such trends are present all over the world. However, he is surprised by stagnation of the domestic economy, especially in construction investments.

Andrej Slapar, CEO of Zavarovalnica Triglav, noted that the insurance gap is not significantly reduced, regardless of how many crises we experience. The fact that only 20% of residential property in Slovenia has adequate earthquake insurance is worrying, added Gorazd Čibej. According to Čibej, raising awareness alone will not be enough; other measures will be needed, including within the framework of a working group that was established at the initiative of the Insurance Supervision Agency to reduce the insurance gap in the field of insurance against natural disasters. The group also includes representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Slovenian Insurance Association.

The last day of the conference began with the question of whether the recently adopted pension reform is a missed opportunity. The participants highlighted importance of raising awareness among the population about pension savings, especially in Slovenia, where saving in the second pillar is not mandatory. Matej Golob Matzele, President of the Management Board of Modra zavarovalnica dd, assessed that the recently adopted reform is a realistic reflection of what can currently be negotiated with social partners.

The final panel discussion focused on artificial intelligence, benefits and risks it brings. The panelists agreed that artificial intelligence tools should be used, as this is part of development, but their use requires responsibility and consistent risk management.
