Moldova's insurance sector grew by 10.81% in the first quarter of 2026, reaching MDL 820.21 million (EUR 40.45 million), according to data published by the National Bank of Moldova.

Non-life insurance dominates the market, accounting for almost 97% of total GWP. And motor insurance is the largest segment (63.13%).

Growth-wise, accident insurance is notable, with triple-digit growth for the quarter. Health insurance also recorded double-digit growth. On the other hand, property insurance saw a nearly 7% y-o-y decline.

Total paid claims increased by 24%, reaching MDL 386.21 million (EUR 19.05 million). The lion's share of paid claims came from motor insurance (MDL 325.21 million). As with premiums, property insurance paid claims for the reporting period declined - by 16.34%.

Of the nine insurers operating in the market in the first quarter, ASTERRA GRUP SA leads in terms of GWP, with over 19% of the market. It is followed by GRAWE CARAT ASIGURARI SA (15.96%) and INTACT ASIGURARI GENERALE SA (13.38%).
